Born in Brooklyn not so many years ago, Dina moved to New Jersey with her family soon after graduating college. Life continued uneventfully for a few years until she met a strikingly handsome computer technician at her place of work. It wasn’t long before her two cats found themselves sharing a house with his two cats, as her now fiancée coaxed her to move further into ‘The Woods’, as her family put it. Cat number five came along, as well as a bullfrog, lizard, a handful of hermit crabs and a tank full of fish. In the meantime, vows were exchanged and somewhere in there Zach came along to complete the picture. It was the birth of her son that drew Dina into the larger community of Lake Shawnee. Beginning with walks around the lake, sunny days at First Beach, and attending the nursery school with her neighbors, Dina become more active within the lake. It was a chance encounter with Eric at Zach’s first swim meet that sealed her fate, when it was mentioned in conversation that the Social Committee was looking for new leadership. It wasn’t long before she put her project management skills to good use, organizing, planning and brainstorming for news ideas with the rest of the committee. Dina began to create events for all age groups – from beach activities for the younger children to the bi-weekly seniors club, the Social Committee became even more active, growing in size and (I can hear her saying this in my head) ‘Always looking for new members!’. Six months went by before Dina began to consider running for a Board position. She finally decided to throw her name in the hat because she thought being part of the Board would enhance her work with the Social Committee. Turns out she was right! Her unique perspective as the mother of a young child and relative newcomer to the lake has brought new ideas to the table and many new faces to lake events. She often reaches back into the past looking for the good ideas that have been forgotten but also isn’t afraid to try new things. So if you have an idea, a suggestion on what can be improved, or would just like to help out – you’ll find her at almost every event. Just walk up and say hello and you can get involved. As she would tell you, there is nothing more rewarding than getting to know your neighbors and learning what we can do to help each other out. |
